introduction
"Dollars and guns are no substitutes for brains and will power." This excellent quote was said by a confusing man with great knowledge. In this quote it describes the way we should handle things, but we do the complete oppisite these days. Dwight David Eisenhower , nicknamed "Ike", was a General of the Army in the United States Army and U.S. politician, who served as the thirty-fourth President of the United States . During the Second World War, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944–45. In 1951, he became the first supreme commander of NATO. His leadership helped turn the tide of World War II. He rode his military success all the way to the White House. Dwight D. Eisenhower's life was a never-ending success story. He graduated from West Point and rose rapidly through the Army ranks. His effective tactics and skillful diplomacy as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II paved the way to the presidency, where he enjoyed two productive terms and vast approval. The Early Years Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas. He was the third of seven sons from David Jacob and Ida Elizabeth Stover Eisenhower. There wasn't much money in the Eisenhower family. The Eisenhowers were very strict pacifists. They were Mennonites and there families had fled religious persecution in Germany. The whole family got down on their knees every morning and evening and prayed. All the praying did not seem to do Ike a lot of good. His father was very harsh on Ike and his brothers. Ike was a mischecious boy as was Edgar and the two were severely beaten by their strict father on many occassions.I believe that Ike's determination came from his father and his soft streak from his mother. After his birth the family moved to Abilene, Kansas where Dwight graduated from high school in 1909. He was awarded a scholarship to West Point military academy. He was commisioned a Second Lieutenant upon graduation in September of 1915. After being stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Dwight met Mary (Mamie) Geneva Doud, and they were married on July 1, 1916. The couple had two sons, Doud Dwight Eisenhower and John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower. Doud Dwight, nicknamed “Little Icky”, was born on September 24, 1917. He died three years later ,on January 2nd,1921,of scarlet fever .Their second son was born in Denver on August 3, 1922.Before running for president, President Truman tried to convince him to run for president as a Democrat. Republican emissaries to his headquarters near Paris persuaded him to run for President in 1952. His conduct during this period lends little credit to him, his behavior toward President Truman and especially Secretary of State Marshall was less than horable. Especially his failure to come to Marshall's defense when anti-Comminist zealots made scandalous charges. He was an instant success with American voters. The slogan "I like Ike" and that irresistible smile appealed to voters. Eisenhower won a sweeping election victory in 1952.

My NHD project 1
Dwight Eisenhower
This year for NHD I will be doing Dwight Eisenhower. It’s kind of weird that I chose to do him because last year my NHD documentary was on Philadelphia’s Notorious Black Mafia. The reason I say this is because they have exactly nothing in common, but this year I was thinking about winning instead of learning. I want to do someone that I know that the judges would want to hear about. I also want to learn more about the Vietnam war, and I know that president Eisenhower had a lot to do with that time period of history. He was named general of the united states military during the Vietnam time period. For this week’s research I found a biography (http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/de34.html) I will read and summarize it for this week.
